Simon Weston OBE Opens Maesgwyn School, Cwmdare

June 25, 2008

Simon Weston at Maesgwyn School War hero Simon Weston OBE provided an inspiration for children when he officially opened their new school.

Children listened in awe as the former Welsh Guard gave an interesting and moving speech as part of the ceremony to open Maesgwyn School, Cwmdare.

The school was forced to close two years ago due to an ongoing programme of asbestos removal across the county. The 114 pupils were temporarily moved to Craig Yr Eos in Penygraig so contractors could work in Maesgwyn.

While work to remove asbestos was taking place, the Council also took the opportunity to refurbish and regenerate the school, which opened in the 1970s as a day special school.

The school now looks like a brand new building, with its fresh and modern interior and exterior and remodelled rooms and classrooms. In addition, the refurbishment also includes the creation of a skills centre in which pupils can learn construction and motor vehicle repair skills.
