A stunning new photographic exhibition borne of over 10 years work telling the story of the people of China is going on show in Aberdare.

Photographer Rhodri Jones tells the story of the nation in a thought provoking and informative way, highlighting the day-to-day problems they face, their often desperate living conditions.

Accompanying his book ‘Made in China’ showed in the International Photo Festivals of China, Holland and Italy as well as other venues in both the UK and abroad, “GO! Internal migration in the People’s Republic of China” is on show in the Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery.

Mr Jones explained: “Over the last 25 years China has experienced a period of unprecedented economic growth. A by-product of which has been an unbelievable internal migration. During this time, according to official estimates, more than 200 million people have moved with as many again likely to be affected in the future.

GO! Internal migration in the People’s Republic of China” goes on show at the Cynon Valley Museum & Gallery from August 15th to October 3rd 2009. Entrance is free. The gallery is open from Monday to Saturday 9am to 4.30pm. For further details visit www.cvmg.co.uk or telephone 01685 886729.

Expect duelling, elopement, bribery, fisticuffs, mistaken identity, near drowning, and finally, imprisonment for debt! This is the orignial and ultimate roadtrip – funny, intriguing, imaginative.

Follow the haphazard and often farcical journey of Samuel Pickwick and a host of well-loved characters including Sam Weller, Mr Jingle, Nathaniel Winkle, Mrs Bardell and The Fat Boy on their weird and wonderful ‘perambulations, perils, travels and adventures’ throughout the country.

European Arts Company is a national and international touring theatre company which has gone from strength to strength, performing all over the UK, Greece and Italy with works by Oscar Wilde, John Buchan, Anton Chekhov and John Osborne. It has developed a reputation for producing quirky classics with great imagination and a highly physical style.

The Pickwick Papers is a Rhondda Cynon Taf Theatres co-production (Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council Cultural Services Department) with European Arts Company, and supported by the Arts Outside Cardiff ACW/WAG production fund, Creu Cymru Inventive Promoter Scheme trhrough funds from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Tickets for this outstanding evening of drama, as part of the act8 drama season at the Cultural Services venues, are just £9.00 (concessions £7.00). Call The Coliseum Box Office now on 01685 881188.

Designed to raise standards of tutoring and promote good practice, the five-week course was attended by talented young tutors from across Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen and Merthy Tydfil.

Among those who took part from Rhondda Cynon Taf were Alex Rees, who teaches songwriting and recording; Emma Hopkins (singing and drama), Benjamin Franks (piano and guitar), Jared Huish (Rock and Pop music), Justin Preece (songwriting and all aspects of Rock and Pop) and Chris Matthews (dj skills).

The course, which included practical training and lesson planning, was delivered by Aberdare-based AX Music and funded by members of the South Wales New Music Forum, including SONIG Youth Music Industry, part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services and YOMAZ – the Youth Music Action Zone.

Tanya Walker-Brown, SONIG co-ordinator, Rhondda Cynon Taf, said: “The course offered new learning opportunities for all of them in their chosen pathways in the creative industries. We are hoping to employ many of the tutors in future.”
