Aberdare Cancer Research Committee Celebrate 50 Years

Fifty years ago to the day (25th November, 1959) the Aberdare Cancer Research Committee had their first meeting.

To celebrate the ‘golden’ occasion the members attended a presentation and buffet evening at the Gloucester Arms in Aberdare.

An evening of reminiscing on the fun and the work of the committee over the years, and a reunion of members who had not met for some time.

In recognition of their commitment members were presented with brooches appropriate to their length of service.

Snowy Blanket for Aberdare

A blanket of snow has descended on Aberdare today – 2nd February 2009 – with further snow expected for the remainder of the week.

Most Aberdare schools were closed today.

Frozen Lake at Dare Valley Country Park

A wonderfully evocative scene was captured at Dare Valley Country Park Upper Lake frozen by local photographer Geraint Davies of Aberdare.

Dare Valley Country Park is a public park near the village of Cwmdare and comprises of 500 acres of woodlands, pasture and mountainside.

Clowns from Aberdare Trefoil Guild recently joined a Christmas dinner and sleepover at the Cardiff Caeglas Guide Activity. The theme of this year’s sleepover was the CIRCUS. Most of the Trefoil Guild members were clowns, but there was a super ’strong man’ from Gwent and also a lion tamer. The ladies from Gwent Trefoil Guild catered with the help of the usual Cardiff team.

Old Photo Exhibition at Penywaun

An Exhibition of Old photos of Penywaun is being held today – Saturday 22nd November – at St Winifred’s Church, Penywaun.

The event is being held as part of a week of celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of St Winifred’s Church, Penywaun.

Between 10am to 5pm.

All warmly welcome.

St Winifred’s Church is located opposite Penywaun Post Office.

Veterans Parade in Aberdare

A Veterans Parade was held today in Aberdare celebrating the contribution made by all those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Plans for a Veterans Day were announced in February 2006 by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, who said the aim was to ensure that the contribution of veterans was never forgotten. Every year since then, Veterans Day has provided a focus for the community to recognise the part played by veterans of all ages in conflicts both past and present.

Easter Party at Aberaman

There was fun and an easter parade at Aberaman this week.

Aberaman Newydd Tenants Association held an Easter Party at Aberaman Ex-Servicemen’s club, Aberaman, on Sat 22nd March.
